Characterization of suspended membrane waveguides towards a photonic atom trap integrated platform

We demonstrate an optical waveguide device, capable of supporting the high, in-vacuum, power necessary for trapping a single atom or cold ensemble with evanescent fields. Our photonic integrated platforms, suspended membrane waveguides, successfully manages powers 6 mW (500 um span) to nearly 30 (125 over un-tethered span. This platform is compatible laser cooling and magneto-optical traps (MOTs) in vicinity waveguide, called MOT needle MOT, key ingredient efficient trap loading. evaluate two novel designs that explore critical thermal management features enable this large handling. work represents significant step toward coupling neutral quantum systems electronic circuits on silicon.
